Hazards: Weather: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Some positive lessons to share with others: Because the group is mainly fifth graders, as in the past we were going to go to a Class II river, in this case the East Fork Carson. However, the flow dropped to unrunnable on the Carson, and we needed a Plan B. On Saturday, we did Coloma to Greenwood and let everyone paddle (three paddle boats and an oar frame as safety). We did put two adults in each paddle raft, and we gave special instruction to the guides to be sure to rescue any swimmers immediately, as a priority, instead to relying on self-rescue. We also had only apprentices guiding paddle boats on Saturday, so this was a good “workout” for them, getting experience with paddle crews “solo” but still in a relatively safe environment. On Sunday we had three more qualified guides come up. We ran Chili Bar, putting in directly from The Nugget. We rigged three oar frames and had two paddle boats. Two of the oar frames were oar-paddle combos (stern frames) so some of the kids got to paddle, but it was not necessary to rely on them when power was needed. They got to still experience the thrills of the Class III rapids, but with a greta amount of safety. We had no incidents, although I must say that I, Jon, had the only completely clean run at Troublemaker. Without tempting the river gods too much, I feel it is necessary to promote awareness of my advanced guide skills :)
