THE WEEKLY ICO UPDATER (WICOU pronounced Why-COO)

 

 

Below are organizational updates and weekly bits of fluff for your entertainment.  I will try to add a weekly photo as well.  Please let me know of any updates you would like added to the WICOU.

 

 

This week’s Bit of Fluff: Earthquake Trivia! (in honor of the 4.0 quake in Piedmont this morning):

1.      The Richter scale uses what Base System? (aka what is the difference in magnitude between a 3.0 and a 4.0?)

 

2.      What was the Magnitude of the 1989 Loma Prieta Quake?

a.      Bonus which game of the World Series was about to start?

b.      Which teams were playing?

 

3.      What was the name of the 1994 Earthquake that hit LA?

 

4.      True or False: California requires all Licensed Engineers to pass a Seismic Portion on the Professional Engineering Test?

 

5.      Which state has the most recorded earthquakes?

 

a.      Bonus: Name a state that hasn’t had any recorded earthquake events in 30 yrs.

 

 

 

 

The Weekly Update: August 17 – August 23, 2015.

 

Current Updates:

 

 

1.      Upcoming Trips: 

a.      Spanish Speaking Citizens: August 22nd on SFA w/ Margery.  Please contact Margery if you are available to guide this trip.

b.      Brewer Middle School/ESA Oakland High: September 5th and 6th on SFA w/ Kevin Jordan.  This will be two one day trips back to back both lead by Kevin.  The Brewer Middle School are the new freshmen entering ESA at Oakland High and then there will be the usual group of ESA students on Sunday.  Please let Kevin know if you can guide or sign up on the website.

 

2.      ICO End of year Party: Mark your Calendar for Saturday October 10th 4pm to 8pm.  Please RSVP via the E-vite link here: http://evite.me/fUxK1HDqVa

 

3.      Veteran Trip UPDATE: ETC has stepped up to fill the void and the 1st Veteran trip a group of 8 homeless veterans, accompanied by the Cal AWE Study, took place last Sunday (8/16/15).  However, it would be great if ICO could also facilitate a veteran trip in August or September.  A TRIP LEADER is NEEDED to Lead a VETERAN Trip!  So Are Guides.  Let Kate Starr know if you are interested and which wknds you are available.

 

4.      Diversity Equity and Inclusion Discussion UPDATE: Mel is looking for one or two people to help organize future discussions. If you are interested in keeping this going and are willing to help with one or two discreet tasks: setting dates and getting the word out, please let Mel know. 

 

5.      Sierra Club Outdoor National Conference: October 2-4 (Friday –Sunday) the Sierra Club will be hosting a Conference to share inventive ideas to help you better connect people to the outdoors. Topics include strategies to teach beginners back country skills, create strong partnerships in order to better local programming, and build an outings program that interests your community. You'll leave the conference inspired to start or grow new and innovative outdoor programs back at home.  More info at http://content.sierraclub.org/outings/national/brochure/sierra-club-outdoors-national-conference-clair-tappaan-lodge.  I plan on attending this conference, please let me know if you are interested in attending so we can coordinate carpool and get everyone registered..

Older Updates:

1.      August River Meeting: has been cancelled.  There will be a September River meeting on Wednesday Sept. 2nd.  The September River Mtg will discuss Recruitment and Filling the Open Positions an Agenda will be forth coming.

 

2.      Outreach Coordinator Needed:

a.      Anthony Scott, who has fearlessly done our outreach and calendaring of late has decided to step down from this role.  Thank you Anthony for all you have done and do for ICO Rafting.  In his absence a new Outreach Coordinator is needed.  The Outreach Coordinator’s job currently: Send applications to partner agencies, both existing and new agencies suggested by ICO volunteers, receive/review the applications, set up a calendar meeting with the trip leaders, send out response letters to all partner agencies who applied.  The position can also be expanded to work with the agencies more.  Additional support can be solicited from other volunteers.
